The Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients is internationally recognized as the authority on the uses, properties and safety of excipients.
The new sixth edition contains 340 fully-referenced monographs, written by over 140 expert pharmaceutical scientists and individually reviewed and updated since the last edition.
The book is extensively illustrated with SEMs and chemical structure diagrams, as well as two-color NIR spectra, line graphs and tables to support easy interpretation of the accompanying text.
An internationally acclaimed reference work recognized as one of the most authoritative and comprehensive sources of information on excipients used in pharmaceutical formulation. This new edition provides 340 excipient monographs.
- Jointly published by the American Pharmacists Association and the Pharmaceutical Press, publications department of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.
- Written by over 140 pharmaceutical scientists from around the world, expert in the manufacture, analysis, or use of excipients.
- Now contains 340 fully referenced excipient monographs:
- 40 monographs new to this edition including a number of currently used coprocessed excipients. New monographs include Glycine, Hydroxypropyl Betadex, Methionine, Neotame, Pentetic Acid, Poly (DL-Lactic Acid), and Tagatose.
- 300 existing monographs completely revised and updated, and NIR spectra newly added.
- New, improved, two-colour text design.
- Information on the uses, and chemical and physical properties of excipients systematically collated from a variety of international sources including: pharmacopeias, patents, primary and secondary literature, websites, and manufacturers data.
- Extensive data provided on the applications, licensing, and safety of excipients.
- Comprehensively cross-referenced and indexed, with many additional excipients described as related substances.
- An international suppliers directory and detailed information on trade names and specific grades or types of excipients commercially available.
- The Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients is an essential resource for formulators in the pharmaceutical industry, as well as those interested in the formulation or production of confectionery, cosmetics, and food products.
The text of the Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients has been completely revised and updated. This new sixth edition contains 340 excipient monographs with a new text design and enhanced online features, compiled by over 140 experts in pharmaceutical formulation or excipient manufacture from Australia, Europe, India, Japan, and the USA.
All the monographs have been reviewed and revised in the light of current knowledge. There has been a greater emphasis on including published data from primary sources although some data from laboratory projects included in previous editions have been retained where relevant. Variations in test methodology can have significant effects on the data generated (especially in the case of the compactability of an excipient), and thus cause confusion. As a consequence, the editors have been more selective in including data relating to the physical properties of an excipient.
However, comparative data that show differences between either source or batch of a specific excipient have been retained as this was considered relevant to the behavior of a material in practice. Over the past few years, there has been an increased emphasis on the harmonization of excipients. For information on the current status for each excipient selected for harmonization, the reader is directed to the General Information Chapter <1196> in the USP32–NF27, the General Chapter 5.8 in PhEur 6.0, along with the "State of Work" document on the PhEur EDQM website (Url: http://www.edqm.eu), and also the General Information Chapter 8 in the JP XV. The Suppliers Directory (Appendix I) has also been completely updated with many more international suppliers included.
Scanning electron microphotographs (SEMs) are also included for many of the excipients. This edition contains over 130 near-infrared (NIR) spectra specifically generated for the Handbook. New monographs include:
